For the beach lovers out there hunting down Vietnam’s best beaches, Sao Beach on the island of Phu Quoc really has to be at the top of your sun-soaked list!
Before I tell you a little more about this stunner, just take a look at the video below and tell me this ain’t paradise…
When is the best time to visit Sao Beach?
Sao beach lies at the southern end of the island of Phu Quoc, and is quite simply the stunning, white-sandy beach your Instagram account / Facebook feed was looking for! Admittedly, the high-season (November – March) is the best time of the year to ensure you get those clean, sandy beaches, but even beyond that period, you can get some mighty fine weather.
With Phu Quoc’s potential reopening in October 2021, this looks like a beach that is going to grab almost everyone’s attention, especially with the beach season just getting into its stride…
I’ve seen a few complaints online about rubbish being washed up on Sao beach, but I spent 5 days there in mid-March and didn’t see any rubbish at all. It could be that rubbish is an off-season issue, when the locals are less pressed to keep things pristine.
Be aware that the beach is a popular one during the high-season, so expect plenty of people at peak times. If you want peace and quiet before the tour buses hit the beach, head there early. What surprised me was that the tourists seemed to all disappear at 5 pm, and then the locals flocked in, complete with their Ninja-style, full-length swimsuits (the Vietnamese are renowned for steering clear of the mid-day sun at the beach!).
What can I do on Sao Beach?
Sao beach is, of course, the perfect beach for kicking back and sinking your toes into some white sandy, er, sands… and with a multitude of swings that are located in photogenic spots along the beach, you’ll be spoilt for choice for that perfect wish you were here pic!
The beach itself is split into three main areas: the southern end, which appears to be fairly chillout, the central zone, which appears to be where the action (and noise) is, including a number of decent eateries, and even jet skis and para-sailing for the more adventurous, and the northern end, which appears to be the quiet, laid-backed, romantic zone. Take your pick (the pics below are in the following order: the northern end, the central zone, and the southern end).
Where can I stay near Sao Beach?
There are a number of great accommodation options near Sao Beach. I stayed at the very decent (and fairly budget-friendly) Wanderlust Bungalows (read my review here), which are just across the road from the main exit road down to Sao Beach. How do I get to Sao Beach?
Sao Beach is located in the An Thoi province, approximately 25 km from the capital of Phu Quoc, Duong Dong (and the popular area around Long Beach). It’s a fairly easy drive from those areas, and if you’ve already made it as far as Sao Beach, head to the little port town of An Thoi at the southern tip of the island for an authentic little fishing port, complete with friendly locals, and a buzzing little high-street.
